Luigi GATTI

Biography

Born on October 7th 1740, Giuseppe Gatti entered the Mantova seminary in order to receive training as priest and musician. After working as a tenor at the « Santa Barbara » Chapel, he was appointed, in 1769, second chapel master. In 1770, he met the Mozarts  - father and son - during their stay in the city. That same year the present « Sestetto » was composed.


In 1782 he gained the position of chapel master in Salzburg, following a competitive examination imposed by Archbishop Coloredo.
It was during this period that he focused his compositional efforts on wind instruments (Quartet for Oboe and String Trio ; Concerto for Bassoon ; Wind Octet).


He died in 1817, composing only circumstancial works in his final years - Oratorios ; Masses ; Welcoming works for important personalities.
