BIOGRAPHY

Jean-Louis Petit studied organ, harpsichord, scoring and composition in Olivier Messiaen’s class at the Paris CNSM, then orchestra conducting under Léon Barzin, Franco Ferrara, Igor Markevitch and Pierre Boulez.

Having won New York’s Mitropoulos Competition, he has conducted orchestras all over the world, performing a wide and diverse symphonic repertoire. He has succeeded in persuading many composers to write works which he then helped premiere and record.

A composer in his own right, he has written for all instruments at the request of specific artists or ensembles. His catalogue includes symphonic and chamber works, concertos, oratorios, seven operas, as well as educational works, totalling over 500 works.
