Cyrille ROSE

Cyrille Chrysogone ROSE was one of the most famous french clarinettist.
Born on february 13th 1830 in Lestrem in the north of France where the majority of the french clarinettists came. He is the son of Jean-Baptiste ROSE and Joséphine HAVERBECQUE. Widowed of Sophie, he had a daughter. He lived in Paris (70 rue de Tocqueville) but he died in Meaux near Paris on June 24th 1902 in his last house (62 avenue de la République).

BIOGRAPHY

His principal teacher was the man who invented (with Buffet) the modern clarinet : Hyacinthe Eléonore Klosé (1808-1880), professor at the Paris
conservatory. Rose win his first prize in the Klosé’s class in 1847.
From 1855 to 1891 he was principal clarinet at the PARIS OPERA ORCHESTRA. Gounod, Massenet and some others consulted him on clarinet technic.The famous aria “Ah! Pleurez mes yeux” from the Massenet opéra « Le Cid » was thought for the Rose alto clarinet.
When the Paris Opera Garnier was opened in 1875 the three clarinet players were Rose, Turban and Mayeur.

From 1855 to 1887, Rose was also principal clarinet in the « Société des concerts du conservatoire de Paris (The musicians of this symphonic
orchestra played also at the Opera and Opera-comique, Italian Theater and Garde Républicaine Band). Rose was teacher at the Paris Conservatory from 1876 to 1900. A lot of clarinet music are dedicated for Rose : Magnani clarinet method, Marty Fantasy (1897), Widor introduction et Rondo (1898), Messager Solo de concours (1899), Holmès Fantasy (1900), L. Mayeur original Fantasy.

His pupils became excellent musicians : Paul Jeanjean (Monte Carlo Opera), Henri Paradis (Paris Opera), Prosper Mimart (Paris Conservatory), Henri Lefèvre (Paris Opera), who received the Rose clarinets (« Buffet ») and who gave to his pupil and brother in law Daniel Bonade (principal clarinet in Philadephia, Cleveland, and the most famous teacher in USA), Henri Leroy (New York Philarmonic), Felix Pagès (Toulouse), Victor Lebailly (Boston Symphony), Henri et Alexandre Selmer, Léon Pourteau (Boston Symphony), René Verney (Lamoureux Orchestra) and the famous soloist Louis Cahuzac (Colonne Orchestra)… who was the principal teacher of Gilbert Voisin (French Radio Orchestra), my first clarinet teacher.

Published in 1893 by « Evette et Shaeffer » publisher and clarinet maker who bought Buffet-Crampon company in Paris, this book of « 32 études » was arranged by Rose from the studies of Wilhelm Franz Ferling (1796-1874), who was first a clarinet player (he composed a clarinet concerto) and followed as an oboe player, he composed 48 études opus 31 for oboe in 1840 who received a great influence of the French and Italian Operas.
Rose was inspired also by Bach in the études n°16 and 20.
Rose published also : 26 études from Mazas and Kreutzer, 9 caprices from Rode, 20 études from Rode, 40 études (published in 1884 by Richault) from Dancla, Fiorillo, Gaviniès, Kreutzer, Mazas, Ries et Schubert, Special edition of Weber pieces for clarinet with Rose cadenzas, Echo pour 2 clarinettes of J. Haydn

These 40 studies were originally written for violin, they have been adapted to the clarinet by ROSE in 1884 and published by the Richault editor, Paris. The names of the different composers are listed at the beginning of each study.

This booklet is reedited as the original with articulation and metronomic markings required by ROSE.
